MINESHOP CATTLE
The herd was started in September 2007 with the purchase of two cows and an in calf heifer from the Glenariff herd at Kings Lynn and the first calf to carry the prefix was born in the October and was called M. Lancaster Angelica. Since then we have had several forays back to Glenariff and elsewhere.
With the goats I have always placed a great emphasis on female lines as being the backbone of any good herd and it is a policy that we are following with the cows.
After a telephone conversation with Gerald Spry in Australia in early 2014 I purchased Sprys Jupiters Pattie B124 which was the start of a long-term project to build the herd on the best of Australian genetics which incorporates some from the USA and of course the UK where it all started. Pattie was flushed to five different bulls and to date we have 14 daughters. Alongside Pattie there are three other Spry female lines and three Royalla families.

I joined the Mineshop herd back in August 2016 after working in Oxfordshire at the Stanford Park Beef Shorthorn herd. I am responsible for the day to day running of the herd and work closely with Chris to manage the herd.
I was raised on Mortimers pedigree Charolais farm in Southampton. Showing was a big part of my life from a very young age, working with the cattle in the ring and dressing in the stall. I’ve always enjoyed working on the farm, helping at every opportunity; be it tractor work, halter training or sweeping the yard.
Cattle farming has been the occupation of many generations of my family. British Charolais and Highland cattle are important breeds and passions for my father, who has judged numerous shows over the years including the Charolais classes at the Royal Highland Show and Highland Cattle at the Oban Highland Sale.
I am one of 4 children, with 2 brothers and a young sister. In 2018 my brothers and I entered the National Young Stars competition with our team “Brothers in Farms”, this a competition which challenges stockjudging, clipping/dressing and ringcraft skills. Another important part of the competition included promoting the British Beef Industry through various marketing methods. After winning the competition we then won a trip to Canada- this was an amazing experience as we had the opportunity to visit several herds with different breeds of cattle. I was lucky enough to see Canadian Beef Shorthorn cattle with similar genetics to some in our herd.
Since joining the herd in 2016, I have seen a number of new blood lines being introduced via embryo transfer. We have predominantly introduced new Australian genetics, in which I see lots of potential to advance our herd. Calving ease, growth rates and excellent maternal instincts are just some of the characteristics exhibited in the Australian genetics we are using, which we believe are essential for the breed.
2017 was the first show season for me with Mineshop. Showing is a great opportunity to advertise our herd and show the new and exciting genetics we are bringing into the breed. Over the last few years, we have amassed several rosettes and tickets, with the 2019 summer show season bringing particular success to the Mineshop herd. Mineshop Maximillian was awarded Reserve Junior Champion at South Of England Show, and Reserve Junior and Reserve Male Champion at the Lincolnshire Show. Winter calf shows brought further success with Mineshop Pattie M240 winning Reserve Native Champion at South Eastern Prime Stock Winter Fayre.
Calving season 2020 is well underway with many calves born to our 3 homebred stock bulls. The first embryo calves that were born in my first calving season at Mineshop are now calving for the second time and we are about to begin our AI programme on our yearling heifers. Exciting times ahead for the herd!
